I am a 67 years old retired electrical engineer. I got my first erector set at the age of 8, a 6 1/2 set. I still have it! I also have about 65 other “perfect” erector sets in my museum in my house - one of every size and style. I restore sets to 100 % complete and sell them on EBay. My eBay name is johndeerebill1. I believe I am the biggest seller of 100 % complete sets, and I often strip and paint parts and entire boxes, sometimes with very expensive catalyzed eurothane automotive paint. Way OVER-RESTORED! I get up to $1800 for a 10092 set (a 12 1/2). I have sold around 200 sets, many to repeat customers outside of eBay. I am restoring 6 sets right now for Christmas sales. 2 of my sets are in the Gilbert kid’s museum. I also have a microscope, the biggest chemistry set 5’ long, a Physics set, and an Electrical Engineers set. All Gilbert products in near perfect condition. I have built a Carousel, and have an LED lit parachute jump in my living room, with a working record player. I also have a 1963 10129 cardboard box set. I was told it was a 1 of 1 prototype set. My oldest set is a perfect 1916 number 4 set that is my favorite, with a working P58 motor.
